How To Tell If Your Little One Needs To Have Their Eyes Checked

If you have an infant or a toddler, you know just how critical it is to ensure that they are healthy and happy all of the time (especially if you ever want to have a good night's sleep again). One of the most difficult things about parenting young kids is that they can't communicate to you what exactly is going on. So, if they are up screaming in the middle of the night, you have to test everything out to determine what is going on with them. Similarly, it can be hard to know if your little kid is having problems with their vision, even when they are in Kindergarten or older. So, how can you tell if your kid needs to have a pediatric eye exam? This article will take a closer look at a few different things.

They Rub Their Eyes a Lot

One of the things that kids do when they can't see well is rubbing their eyes to try to see things a bit more clearly. If you notice that your little one is constantly rubbing their eyes, then this is a strong sign that something is wrong with their vision and they need to have their eyes checked.

They Blink a Lot

Blinking is our body's way to naturally lubricate our eyes. Every time we blink, our eyelids coat our eyeballs with tears to help keep them moist, lubricated, functioning, and comfortable. Although blinking is totally normal, blinking all of the time may not be. If you notice that your little one blinks incessantly, it could be a sign that they are trying to see what is in front of them and so they are forcing themselves to blink a lot.

They Have a Lazy Eye

Lazy eye, or strabismus, is one of the most common eye diseases that pediatric eye doctors treat young patients for. The good news about this condition is that it can easily be treated with something like a patch. All you have to do is place a patch over the strong eye, which will train the lazy or weak eye to work harder, and to develop more.

They Get Headaches

If your child is old enough to communicate with you and they are constantly complaining about headaches, it's definitely worth taking them in. Headaches are often a sign of vision problems in young kids, but it could also be a sign of something else.

If you notice that your little one is experiencing any of these things, it's time for you to reach out to a pediatric eye care center near you.
